When my dog-loving son was young, I grabbed ‘My Dog’ on it’s cover alone, for him. It’s billed ‘Junior Fiction’. >> #pblitchat

When I flicked through, I can see why he was disturbed. He was too sensitive for that book. And there wasn’t much hope. #sad :’( #pblitchat.

Special Announcement – WriteOnCon

Last year a number of #pblitchat members (including Karen and I) attended WriteOnCon – a free, online writing conference for those in the children’s publishing industry. There was something for all genres – including picture book authors and illustrators.

It’s happening again, this week, 16-18th August, American-time. Check out the writeoncon site for more information. You will need to register to take part in some events – but don’t be scared. It is well worth your time.

Today’s chat was simply fantastic. Our special guest was PhD candidate, @ChloeKillen who recently presented a paper entitled ‘Fear & Safety in Australian children’s literature: exploring the relationship between tradition & innovation’ at the International Research Society of Children’s Literature conference in Brisbane. Our discussion centred around the incredible picture book, THE RED TREE by Shaun Tan and how it is a combination or tradition and innovation. The take-home message from today’s chat, in @ChloeKillen’s words, was ‘instead of seeing tradition & innovation as oppositional, we need to see them as informing & supporting each other.’ You can read the full transcript here and I hope you find it as inspiring as I (@KarenCollum) did.
